Somewhere between woodlands, a coastline, and a footnote in a book nobody’s finished reading, there is a world called Hidden Atlas. I am Charan Singh and I paint it, slowly, in watercolour and ink, one wandering creature at a time.
I learned mostly by getting lost in imaginary places and refusing to come back with nothing to show for it. Every painting is a small report from the field: a turtle selling books out of a cart, a fox who has found a lighthouse he was not really looking for, a badger who has strong opinions about tea and none at all about deadlines.
I paint, mostly because the world insists on having its tales and tails, and I insist on painting them anyway. Sometimes I know the story behind a painting. Sometimes the painting seems to know it better than I do. I like making places that don’t exist and then taking far too much time deciding what should be in them.
Nothing here is a print of a print of a trend. Every scene starts as an idea I cannot quite explain, and ends as a painting I can.
Thank you for wandering in. The adventure’s always on.
